Frequently Asked Questions (Tallow Balm For Skin)
We get a lot of questions about our tallow balm, and rightly so! People more than ever want to know what's in their organic skincare products and what goes into making them. Please check out this list of frequently asked questions below but be sure to contact me if you still have any unanswered questions.
What is tallow?
Tallow is the rendered fat from suet, which is found around an animal’s kidneys and loins. It’s incredibly nutrient-dense and one of nature’s best sources of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). At room temperature, tallow is much firmer than regular body fat.
What does "organic" mean to you?
To us, "organic" is about real, natural goodness. Before organic certification even existed, cattle thrived on wild green pastures and that's the way nature intended it.
Is your product organic-certified?
No, and here’s why: Organic certification allows for animals to be fed organic soy, grain, wheat, corn, and palm kernel husks. We believe in something better—sticking to an animal’s natural diet.
What makes your product stand out?
Our tallow skin care fats come from free-to-roam, 100% grass-fed Queensland cattle. No grain, no soy, no additives—just pure, natural goodness.
Why do you prioritise grass-fed over organic certification?
Grass-fed is how nature intended. It results in healthier animals and a superior product. Organic certification, on the other hand, can sometimes be achieved through technicalities rather than true quality farming practices.
What is Meat Standards Australia (MSA)?
MSA allows "grass-fed" cattle to be grain-finished for up to 70 days. We don’t believe in this practice and feedlots are out of the question - Our supplier's cattle remain 100% grass-fed, always.
What does 100% grass-fed mean?
It means our supplier's cattle eat only pasture—no grain, no additives, no processed feeds.
Do your cattle receive antibiotics or growth hormones?
No. Our supplier's cattle are raised without antibiotics or growth hormones to ensure a clean, natural, and healthy product.
Do your suppliers feed their cattle Bovaer?
No. Our suppliers do not use Bovaer or any other feed additives designed to alter methane production. Our supplier's cattle remain 100% grass-fed, with a completely natural diet.
How do you source your ingredients?
Our butcher works directly with farmers right here on the Darling Downs in beautiful Queensland. They purchase straight from the paddock. There is no middle man between the paddock and the butcher. This guarantees traceability and the highest standards of quality and animal welfare.
How can I tell your tallow is unprocessed?
Natural tallow has a creamy white colour and a rich, natural scent. If a fat looks overly uniform and lacks any scent, it has likely been heavily processed.
What is hydrogenation, and do you use it?
Hydrogenation is a chemical process that alters fats, making them more uniform in texture and appearance. We never use hydrogenation—our tallow remains as natural as possible.
Why are natural fats better?
They retain their nutrients, flavour, and texture, making them far superior for skincare and health compared to processed fats.
Do you deodorise your products?
No, and we’re damn proud of that! Our natural fats retain their original aroma and nutrient profile—one of the reasons our tallow based skin care is so highly valued.
Why does the aroma of your tallow vary?
Our tallow reflects the diet and environment of the grass-fed animals it comes from. Natural variations in aroma between batches are a sign of authenticity—it’s the real "paddock to skincare" experience.
Is tallow balm healthier than synthetic skincare ingredients?
Absolutely! Tallow balm is rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, as well as CLA, which deeply nourishes the skin. Unlike synthetic ingredients, it is easily absorbed and supports the skin’s natural barrier.
Why is tallow being used for skincare?
Great question! Tallow for skin care is actually an ancient traditional remedy that is making a comeback. Because its fatty acid profile is very similar to human skin, it makes it highly nourishing and easily absorbed.
What benefits does tallow provide for the skin?
Packed with vitamins A, D, E, and K, tallow deeply moisturises, protects, and supports healthy skin. It’s especially good for dry and sensitive skin.
How is tallow used in skincare?
It’s a key ingredient in balms, lotions, and soaps, working as a rich, deeply nourishing base for natural skincare products.
Is tallow safe for all skin types?
Tallow is gentle and suits most skin types. As with any skincare product, it’s best to do a patch test first to make sure it works for you.
Is your tallow balm vegan?
Absolutely not, tallow balm is made from the rendered down fat of ruminant red meat animals like sheep and cows. Our Whip Tallow Balms are made from 100% grass fed and finished beef fat.
